Healthcare & Wellness

Education is the first step toward a healthier you.  These are some of our favorite general wellness resources:

  • WebMD blends award-winning expertise in medicine, journalism, health communication and content creation to bring you the best health information possible.
  • NPR Health creates and distributes award-winning news and information that reaches 27.2 million listeners every week.
  • medpageTODAY is a resource for physicians that provides a clinical perspective on breaking medical news.
  • Healthandwellness.com is one of the fastest growing resources for credible health and wellness information.
  • National Institute for Health: NIH's mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.
Eat Healthy.  What you eat plays a pivotal role in the way your body functions.  "The effect that diet can have on how you feel today and in the future is astounding," says nutritionist Elizabeth Somer.  Kickstart your health with superfoods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, and healthy fats (and Harvard University reminds you to take your daily multivitamin). Try these delicious recipes from Harvard's School of Public Health and find answers to nutrition questions here.

Exercise.  Increase your chances of a long life, reduce your chances of developing heart disease and osteoporosis, lower your cholesterol, improve your mood and confidence.  Why wait?  Explore Harvard University's Staying Active Resource and start getting fit today.  For low impact on joints and a serious core workout, try Yoga to improve circulation, flexibility, and balance.  Visit the Huntsville Yoga Center to find about local classes.

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is an estimate of body fat, based on your height and weight.  A range of 18.5 - 25 indicates optimal weight.  Calculate yours here.  Need to lower your BMI?  Check out these 6 steps to Rev Up your Metabolism and Jump Start Weight Loss from Health magazine.  For our patients 50+, we encourage you to start Dr. Oz's 6 month Health Plan:  stretching, strength and balance exercises to start you on the road to a healthier you.  Tell us your results, we may publish your story on the MTM website!
